The perfect movie for Christmas is the surprisingly progressive P. S. Despite drawbacks and more clich. The movie will not immediately ring jingle bells with a theme about a dead husband (Gerard Butler) who reaches from beyond the grave to inspire his widow (Swank). Starting with a pat lovers' spat, P. S. I Love You is ultimately rooted in reality, peeling back the layers of one couple's lives. The novel- based story begins just before his life expires, and, when opening credits roll, it's a slide show of love story snapshots. The remainder of the journey. The movie improves as it goes. That it flirts with formula does not hinder its ability to evince tears and laughter. Melodramatic, realistic and romantic, P. S. I Love You appropriately saves the best for last. Living in what must be New York's ugliest apartment building on a corner of Orchard Street, job- hopping Holly (Swank) and her Irish- born spouse Gerry (Butler) are both typical independent, urban Americans; they work hard, wonder whether to have kids, and they have a lot of growing up to do. Their social lives involve hanging out in bars and director Richard La. Gravenese taps today's adult city lifestyle. That means Holly's friends (Gina Gershon and Lisa Kudrow) include an amiable pal and an acerbic feminist and mom (impeccable Kathy Bates) owns a bar staffed by an awkward Yankees fan (Harry Connick, Jr.). There's a younger sister, too, who says what's on her mind and does as she pleases. Everyone tries to console Holly when Gerry dies in the prime of life. But, as anyone who has lost someone dear knows, grief is unique to the individual and Holly holes up, hides and refuses to let go. Because he loved her, Gerry knew this would happen. When all is written and read, with classic Hollywood guideposts on the road to breaking free, P. S. I Love You's theme that true love begins with egoism. Peppered references to luck, leprechauns and what comes . She does so of her own volition and, as a transformation, it's fabulous. So is Hilary Swank, who exudes love, loss and the energy of a person desperately trying to cope and achieve something more. Whether she's unknowingly tearing the heart out of Connick's hapless bartender or flirting with a handsome roadside stranger, Swank's a strong, vulnerable and natural presence. La. Gravenese, who also directed her in the winning Freedom Writers, ought to make it three for three and continue to work with her; he allows her to shine by letting her be. Butler is fine, too, as alpha male Gerry, who calls upon his woman to be her best in every situation, though his role is necessarily limited. Butler's chemistry with Swank ignites their few, pivotal scenes and fuels the movie. Gerry's notes come with instructions that play out as episodes within chapters, from a vocal performance that allows Holly to stop suppressing her pain to an important discovery. Each realization is part of a progression toward personal happiness. Losing someone close, like any major loss, tends to show the crinkles and cracks in one's life and P. S. I Love You does it up in spades. Holly's resurgence falters and flows; she gets angry with friends for moving on, she makes mistakes and she falls apart, running to mommy in the picture's most emotional scene. REVIEWS OF SIMILAR MOVIES. I Love You is a 2. American drama film directed by Richard La. Gravenese. The screenplay by La. Gravenese and Steven Rogers is based on the 2. Cecelia Ahern. It stars Hilary Swank, Gerard Butler, Lisa Kudrow, Gina Gershon, James Marsters, Harry Connick Jr. It was distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures and Momentum Pictures. Holly and Gerry are a married couple who live on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. They are deeply in love, but they fight occasionally. By winter that year, Gerry suddenly dies of a brain tumor, and Holly realizes how much he means to her as well as how insignificant their arguments were. Deeply distraught, Holly withdraws from her family and friends out of grief until they descend upon her on her 3. They are determined to prod the young widow to face the future and explore what her life choices should be. As they rally around Holly and help organize her apartment, a cake is delivered, and with it is a message from Gerry. It proves to be the first of several meaningful messages — all ending with . Holly's mother believes that Gerry's letters are keeping Holly tied to the past. But they are, in fact, pushing her into the future. With Gerry's words as her guide, Holly slowly embarks on a journey of rediscovery. Gerry arranged for Holly and her friends Denise and Sharon to travel to his homeland of Ireland. They arrive at their destination, a house in the beautiful Irish countryside where they find letters from Gerry for Sharon & Denise, one asking Denise to take Holly to his favorite pub. While there, they meet William, a singer who strongly reminds Holly of her deceased husband. He asks her to stay to see him after his last song, which he dedicates to her. Upon hearing it, she is overcome with emotion and walks out, because it was the song Gerry sang to her shortly after they first met. During the vacation, while on a fishing trip, they lose the boat's oars, leaving the three women stranded in the middle of a lake. During their wait for help, Sharon announces that she is pregnant and Denise reveals she is getting married. This news causes Holly to relapse emotionally and again withdraw into herself. They are eventually rescued by William, whom Sharon and Denise invite to stay the night because of the pouring rain. Unable to deny their feelings for each other, they kiss, and William and Holly become intimate. They begin a conversation about her deceased husband and Holly asks William to drive her to visit her in- laws. Upon Holly revealing their names, William realizes she is the widow of his childhood best friend. Revealing this to Holly causes her to panic, but William calms her down and starts to tell stories about his and Gerry's childhood. The next day, Holly visits Gerry's parents and while there, she also receives a letter from Gerry reminding her of their first meeting. Arriving home, Holly again withdraws from family and friends. As she continues to become more and more lost, she is inspired by Gerry after finding one of his suspender clips next to one of her shoes and realizes she has a flair for designing women's shoes; she enrolls in a class that teaches how to actually make the shoes she has designed. A new found self- confidence allows her to emerge from her solitude and embrace her friends' happiness. While on a walk with her mother, she learns that her mother was the one whom Gerry asked to deliver his letters after his death and receives the last letter. As the film ends with Holly taking her mother on a trip to Ireland, we see that Holly has opened herself up to the journey beginning with the next chapter of her life, and wherever it takes her she has the hope of falling in love again. Production. None of songs are included on the official soundtrack. Reception. Review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes gives a score of 2. Swank has done her best work. Yet as directed by Richard La. Gravenese .. It's preposterous in big and small matters .. The film is not a beautiful object or a memorable cultural one, and yet it charms, however awkwardly. Swank's ardent sincerity and naked emotionalism dovetail nicely with Mr. La. Gravenese's melodramatic excesses. The only good things in it are Lisa Kudrow and Swank's wardrobe. The plot is unbelievable, although a competent script could have fixed that. The direction is flabby and uninspired, the casting is wrongheaded, and the performances run the gamut from uninteresting to insufferable .. Richard La. Gravenese's trip into Lifetime territory may define the guilty pleasure of the genre .. As an exercise in chick- flickery, P. S. I Love You wants to possess the soulfulness of harsh reality and the lilt of romantic fantasy at the same time. In this case, at least, it simply can't be done. I Love You arrives – signed, sealed and delivered just on time. It eventually grossed $5. North American box office and $9.
